What is the best way to understand Lyon's layout before I walk?
Lyon sits where the Saône and the Rhône run parallel for a stretch, with the Presqu'île squeezed between them. The old town and Fourvière rise on the right bank of the Saône, and the Croix-Rousse climbs north from the Presqu'île. Keep the two rivers and the two hills in mind and the city's streets line up.
When is the best time of year to walk Lyon?
April to June and September to early October give you mild walking weather and long daylight. July and August can be hot, especially on the shadeless Presqu'île and the climb to Croix-Rousse. Winter is quieter but the traboules close earlier and some outdoor sites shorten their hours.
How do I get around on foot and by public transport?
The city centre is compact and mostly flat between the rivers, but the two hills are steep. The F2 funicular climbs Fourvière, and metro line C is a rack railway up the Croix-Rousse. Both use the same TCL ticket as buses and trams; a single 1-trip ticket for zones 1 and 2 costs €2.10 and is valid for 1 hour.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including museums, cafés, and shops. Small market stalls and some bouchons may prefer cash or a minimum card amount, so carry €20 to €30 in small notes.
Is Lyon safe for a walking visitor?
Lyon is a safe city by French standards. Take normal city precautions around Part-Dieu station and crowded metro platforms, and keep a hand on your phone in busy tourist areas. The traboules are private residential passageways, so walk through quietly and do not block doorways.
What is a traboule and can I enter them?
A traboule is a covered passage that cuts through a block, usually linking a street to a courtyard and another street. The traboules of Vieux Lyon and the Croix-Rousse are private courtyards opened to the public by agreement with their owners. They are generally open in the daytime and can close without notice.
Do the markets run every day?
No. The Marché Saint-Antoine on the Saône quay runs Tuesday to Sunday morning and closes Monday. The Croix-Rousse market along the boulevard runs every morning except Monday. Both are at their best before midday.
