The overview

Reims is a city built for walking, with the cathedral where French kings were crowned, a third-century Roman gate, and a compact centre largely destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt in the 1920s. A short walk from the centre, champagne houses store their bottles in chalk quarries cut into the Butte Saint-Nicaise. The two stories sit side by side.

Before you go

What is the best way to see Reims in one day?

Walk the compact center in the morning, see the cathedral in the afternoon, and spend the late afternoon on the Butte Saint-Nicaise visiting one champagne house. This keeps the day on foot and groups the sights that sit close together.

When is the best time of year to visit Reims?

Spring and early autumn give mild walking weather. The Cryptoportique opens only from 1 July to 20 September, Parc de Champagne is open April to October, and the cathedral tower closes from mid-November to mid-February.

How do I get around Reims?

The center is compact and most of this plan is on foot. Tram lines T1 and T2 and city buses cover longer links, and Reims is served by the TGV station and Reims station.

How much money do I need for a day in Reims?

The cathedral nave is free, the tower costs 9 euros, Pommery's self-guided cellar tour costs 30 euros, and city museums cost 5.50 euros. Add lunch and coffee.

Is Reims safe to walk around?

Reims is generally safe for visitors. Keep to the well-lit main streets and squares at night and watch belongings in the station area.

Do I need to book champagne house visits in advance?

Yes for cellar tours, which can fill up. Book Pommery online; Ruinart's gardens are free and need no reservation.
