Self-guided walking tours in Rouen

Rouen's centre is small enough to walk end to end, and this plan does. The main sights sit along a mostly pedestrian spine from Place du Vieux-Marché to the cathedral, with the northern and Saint-Maclou quarters fanning out from it, and the whole route fits inside about a kilometre and a half square. The ground is flat, but the cobbles on Rue Saint-Romain, Rue Damiette and Rue Martainville are hard going for wheels.

May, June and September give you long days without the peak summer crowds; July and August are the busiest months. If you can choose the day of the week, pick Saturday or Sunday, when the Vieux-Marché and Saint-Marc markets are both trading in the morning and Saint-Maclou church is open.

Rouen is a day trip by train from Paris: Saint-Lazare to Rouen Rive Droite takes 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 on the Nomad network. Once you arrive, walk: the station is about 15 minutes above Place du Vieux-Marché, and every stop on this plan is on one continuous route. If you do need the metro, Gare-Rue Verte and Palais de Justice are consecutive stops on the Astuce network, and travel is free on Saturdays, though a validated ticket is still required.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Rouen, and the Historial Jeanne d'Arc takes cash, cards, cheques and ANCV holiday vouchers at its desk. Keep some cash for the market stalls at the Vieux-Marché and the Saint-Marc brocante, where small traders may prefer it. The one place that runs the other way is the Tour Jeanne d'Arc, whose desk has taken cards only since April 2024.

The Rouen Pass costs 25 euros for 24 hours, 37 for 48 and 45 for 72, and bundles the Gros-Horloge and the Historial Jeanne d'Arc with guided tours, temporary exhibitions, unlimited Astuce transport and the river shuttle. The clock starts at first use, not at purchase. Weigh it against this plan's 27 euros of entries: the municipal museums are already free, so the pass only pays back if you add guided tours or trips out to Jumièges. Its transport can only be used through the Rouen Pass app.

Rouen is a safe, compact city for a solo visitor, and the old-town streets stay lit and populated into the evening, since the pedestrian spine and the Saint-Maclou quarter carry people well past dinner. Take normal city care around the station at night and in the market crowds, where pickpockets work. The quieter side streets off the main axis empty out early, so keep to the lit lines if you are walking back late.
