Start on Place du Vieux-Marché while the covered market is full and the morning light is on the Église Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc. The square is where Joan of Arc was burned on 30 May 1431, and a low marker in the paving records the spot. From there walk the half-timbered main street and climb the Gros-Horloge belfry, which opens at 10:00 from April to September and only at 14:00 the rest of the year. Continue past the Palais de Justice, the Gothic courthouse begun in 1499, and end the block at the cathedral's west front. The cathedral is free to enter and does not close at midday from Tuesday to Saturday; restoration work high on the spire began in summer 2026 and leaves the façade Monet painted open to view.

Joan of Arc's trial, then lunch

Give the Historial Jeanne d'Arc the middle of the day. It sits in the archbishop's palace, in the rooms of the 1431 condemnation and the 1456 rehabilitation, and its digital route runs 90 minutes to two hours, so a 12:00 entry puts you back on the street around 14:00. It stays open through lunch when the churches do not, which is why it belongs here rather than at the end of the day; the last route of the day leaves at 17:15. Eat before or after on Rue Saint-Romain, the timbered lane running east from the cathedral.

The keep, the free museum, and Saint-Ouen

Head north of the cathedral. Start at the Tour Jeanne d'Arc, the castle keep where Joan was shown the instruments of torture in 1431; it reopened on 20 June 2026 as a hands-on reconstruction of a 13th-century fortress interior, and it closes for lunch between 13:00 and 14:00. Then cross to the Musée des Beaux-Arts for the free Monet view of the cathedral, and follow Rue des Fossés Louis VIII, which preserves the line of the medieval rear ditches Louis VIII ceded to the city in 1224, to the Abbatiale Saint-Ouen. Saint-Ouen is the tightest door of the day: it shuts at 17:00, 18:00 from April to September, so if you are past 16:00 go there first and come back to the museum, which stays open until 18:00. Finish in the Jardin de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, laid out on the old abbey grounds.

The antiques quarter and the dyers' stream

Close the day in the Saint-Maclou quarter, walked for its streets rather than its interiors: by this hour the church and the parish doors have shut, and the quarter is worth the walk anyway. Start at Église Saint-Maclou's five-bay flamboyant west front, then take Rue Damiette, the antiques street, and the Aître Saint-Maclou, a plague cemetery of 1348 whose timber galleries are carved with skulls and gravediggers' tools; its courtyard is free and stays open until 19:00. Continue along the Eau-de-Robec, the dyers' stream the quarter is named for, to Place Saint-Marc, the weavers' hall church of Saint-Vivien, and the Fontaine de la Croix-de-Pierre, Rouen's oldest fountain. If you would rather see inside Saint-Maclou, swap this block with the afternoon and accept that you will miss the nave of Saint-Ouen.
