Self-guided walking tours in Clermont-Ferrand

Clermont-Ferrand is compact enough for a full day on foot. The old town and cathedral hill take a morning, Montferrand and the Michelin museum take the afternoon, and Royat's thermal gorge works as an early evening loop. Tram line A and bus line B fill the gaps between the three walks, so you never need a car.

The Montferrand market fills Place de la Rodade every Friday from 7:00 to 13:00. It is the bastide's main square and still the weekly heartbeat of a town that kept its own identity until 1731.

Tram line A crosses the centre and reaches both L'Aventure Michelin and the Musée d'Art Roger-Quilliot in Montferrand. The wider T2C bus network covers everything else, including bus line B from the airport and Royat.

Bus line B runs to Royat Pl. Allard, the stop at the bottom of the thermal gorge. It is the same line that serves the airport at the other end, passing through the centre.

Take the Panoramique des Dômes rack railway from its base station; it climbs to 1,465 metres in about 15 minutes. An adult return ticket starts at €17.20, and T2C bus line P36 stops at the departure station.

Plan roughly €40 to €60 per person: €13 for L'Aventure Michelin, €5 for the Musée d'Art Roger-Quilliot, lunch, and from €17.20 if you add the Puy de Dôme return train. The cathedral, the basilica and the old town walks are free.

The three walks cover the old town, Montferrand and Royat. Beyond them, L'Aventure Michelin at 32 rue du Clos Four tells the tyre firm's story, the ASM Experience at the Stade Marcel-Michelin covers the city's rugby club, and the Puy de Dôme rack railway is a half-day excursion to the summit of the Chaîne des Puys.

Clermont-Ferrand is a safe, compact city for a solo day on foot, and the T2C network makes it easy to ride back after dark. Keep the usual city awareness around the railway station at night.
