One day in Clermont-Ferrand: a self-guided walking itinerary
One day through three Clermonts: the black cathedral hill, the Michelin bastide of Montferrand, and the thermal gorge at Royat.

How do you spend one day in Clermont-Ferrand on foot?
Clermont-Ferrand is built on the rim of a volcano chain, and one day here moves through all three of its faces: the black stone old town, the rival bastide of Montferrand, and the thermal gorge at Royat. This plan walks the cathedral hill and the covered market in the morning, rides the tram to Montferrand for the Michelin museum and the art museum in the afternoon, and closes at Royat's thermal park if daylight remains. Keep the Puy de Dôme rack railway and its view over the Chaîne des Puys for a second morning, or swap it into the afternoon instead of Royat.

Start on Place de Jaude while the café terraces are still filling, then cross into the Halle Gourmande Saint-Pierre before the lunch rush. Climb Rue des Gras past the Hôtel Fontfreyde photography centre, then reach the cathedral for its quietest opening hour. The building is free and visits begin at 9:00. From the west door, step onto Place de la Victoire, where the bronze medallions of the Parcours du Port mark the route to the basilica.

From Place de la Victoire, walk up to the Fontaine d'Amboise, restored in 2019, then to the UNESCO-listed Basilique Notre-Dame-du-Port. The basilica is free and open daily from 9:00 to 18:00, and to 19:00 in July and August. After the basilica, loop up to Place Delille and back down for lunch.

Michelin and the bastide of Montferrand
Take tram line A toward Montferrand and get off at Stade Marcel-Michelin for L'Aventure Michelin. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the 2,000 square metre museum, and arrive before the last entry 90 minutes before closing. Then cross into the bastide: the flat grid of Place de la Rodade, the carved apothecary and Adam and Eve houses, and the Gothic Église Notre-Dame-de-Prospérité. Finish at the Musée d'Art Roger-Quilliot on Place Louis-Deteix, where the same tram line stops.

Royat's thermal gorge
If daylight remains, take bus line B to Royat Pl. Allard and walk the thermal gorge up the Tiretaine. The route passes the Grotte du Chien lava cave, the Roman baths uncovered in 1881, and the thermal baths where Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie took the cure in 1862. End at the fortified church of Saint-Léger, then ride the same bus back down.

Planning your day
Is one day enough for Clermont-Ferrand?
One full day covers the three walks: the old town and cathedral hill in the morning, Montferrand and the Michelin museum in the afternoon, and Royat's thermal gorge in the early evening. The Puy de Dôme is a half-day excursion outside the city, so it works better on a second morning.
When should I visit Clermont-Ferrand?
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking the steep old town. July and August bring longer opening hours at the cathedral, the Michelin museum and the Puy de Dôme rack railway, and the cathedral basilica and art museum stay open later in summer.
How do I get from the airport or the station into the centre?
Bus line B links Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport to Place de Jaude in about 30 minutes. From the SNCF railway station, bus E1 runs to L'Aventure Michelin, and the museum is also a 30 minute walk from the station.
