Self-guided walking tours in Orlando

Downtown Orlando is compact, flat, and walkable. The Lake Eola loop, the Church Street corridor, and the Thornton Park and Lake Eola Heights historic districts all sit within a grid of about one square mile. Sidewalks are wide and well maintained. The free LYMMO bus fills in any gaps. Outside downtown, most neighborhoods require a car or rideshare, but the core covered by this itinerary is designed to be done entirely on foot.

Orlando has a full downtown of lakes, museums, historic neighborhoods, and local food that existed for nearly a century before the first theme park broke ground. Lake Eola Park is the city's living room. The Orange County Regional History Center covers 2,000 years of Central Florida in a 1927 Beaux-Arts courthouse. The Orlando Museum of Art holds 3,300 works in Loch Haven Park. Winter Park, a 20-minute drive north, has the world's largest Tiffany glass collection at the Morse Museum and a scenic boat tour through a chain of lakes. The Mills 50 district is one of Florida's largest Vietnamese commercial corridors. College Park has the Jack Kerouac House and a century-old public golf course. Parramore, west of the tracks, tells the story of Orlando's oldest Black neighborhood.

The best combination of good weather and manageable crowds is the first two weeks of November and the last three weeks of January. Winter months, December through February, have the most comfortable temperatures but the highest hotel rates. Summer, June through September, brings near-daily afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity with temperatures around 92°F. Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking from mid-August to mid-October. Check the National Hurricane Center forecast if traveling during those months.

Downtown Orlando is best navigated on foot, with the free LYMMO bus as backup. LYMMO runs three color-coded lines on dedicated lanes through the core, Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. For trips outside downtown, SunRail commuter rail runs Monday through Friday from Kissimmee to DeBary with stops at Church Street, Winter Park, and other neighborhoods; one-way fares range from $2 to $5. LYNX city buses cost $2 per ride or $4.50 for an all-day pass. Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are widely available.

A full day downtown runs about $50 to $80 per person. The largest costs are food and any museum admissions. Lake Eola Park, the historic district walks, and the library are all free. The History Center costs $8. A swan boat rental is $15. Lunch runs $12 to $18, dinner $18 to $34. Coffee and a snack add $5 to $8. The LYMMO bus is free. If you add the Orlando Museum of Art in Loch Haven Park, admission is $20 for adults. A trip up to Winter Park by SunRail costs about $4 round trip, plus $6 for the Morse Museum.

Downtown Orlando is generally safe during daylight and early evening hours, especially around Lake Eola Park, Thornton Park, Church Street, and the central business district. These areas are well lit, regularly patrolled, and busy with residents and office workers during the day. As in any city, stay aware of your surroundings, particularly after dark west of the railroad tracks and in quieter stretches of the Parramore neighborhood. The LYMMO bus is a good option after sunset if you prefer not to walk.
