Șchei, the gates, and the narrow lane

Start at St Nicholas Church in Șchei while the courtyard is calm, where the stone church begun in 1495 is painted inside and out. Step into the First Romanian School next door when it opens; the museum keeps the first books printed in Romanian and the classroom that began teaching the language in 1583. Walk north through Șchei Gate, then pass its neighbor Catherine's Gate, the only medieval gate still standing, raised by the Tailors' Guild in 1559. End the block on Strada Sforii, the narrowest street in Romania, where two people pass each other sideways.

Black Church and the Council Square

Walk up to the Black Church, the great Gothic hall church blackened by the fire of 1689, and step inside for the wall of Ottoman carpets and the pipe organs. From April to October it stays open until 19:00, so midday still leaves you room. Then cross Piața Sfatului to the Council House, the old town hall with the four faced clock, now the county history museum. Have lunch at one of the tables around the square before the afternoon walk east.

The walls and the ride up Tâmpa

Head down from the square to the Weavers' Bastion, the largest of the seven guild bastions on the old walls, a hexagonal fort kept by the linen weavers and now a museum of the city's fortifications. Then follow Aleea de sub Tâmpa, the tree lined promenade at the foot of the mountain, to the cable car station. The rebuilt line reopened on 19 October 2025 with 25 seat cabins, and the ride up is short. Buy the round trip online ahead of time, then ride up for the view over the rooftops you have just been walking beneath.

Republicii and a late dinner

Come down from Tâmpa while the cable car is still running and walk back to Strada Republicii, the pedestrian spine of the old town that was once the coppersmiths' street. The old guild workshops now hold cafes, pastry shops, and shopfronts, and the street settles after the day trippers leave. Find a table for dinner and let the mountain close the day behind you.
