How do you spend one day in Bucharest on foot?

This one-day plan walks Bucharest the way the city actually sits: down Calea Victoriei from Revolution Square to the river, through the Old Town's merchant lanes, over to the Palace of the Parliament, and up the Kiseleff axis to the lake. It times the paid sights for their quieter hours, books the one place that needs a reservation, and leaves room to sit down at Casa Capșa and Caru' cu Bere along the way. Run it Wednesday to Sunday, when the headline museums are open.

    Calea Victoriei, from Revolution Square to the river

      Start at the Romanian Athenaeum before the concert crowds arrive, then cross to the Central University Library and the Memorial of Rebirth in Revolution Square. Step into the National Museum of Art when it opens at 10:00 for the royal apartments and the Brâncuși rooms, then walk south past the Telephone Palace to Casa Capșa for coffee and a slice of Joffre cake. Continue by the Cercul Militar and through the Macca-Villacrosse Passage's glass arcade, pause at the CEC Palace's dome, and end at the National Museum of Romanian History.

      From the History Museum, cross into the Old Town's eastern grid. Start in Stavropoleos Monastery's carved courtyard, then sit down for lunch at Caru' cu Bere. After eating, browse the balconied Cărturești Carusel bookshop, walk Lipscani's old guild lanes, cut through the Hanul cu Tei passage, see the Old Court Church, and close in Hanul lui Manuc's timber gallery.

      The Palace of the Parliament

        Walk south from the Old Town to the People's Salvation Cathedral, the world's tallest Orthodox church, then cross to the Palace of the Parliament for your booked interior tour. The National Museum of Contemporary Art sits inside the Palace's glass wing, and Piața Constituției opens in front. Book the Palace tour the day before and carry your passport or national ID.

        The Kiseleff museum axis, ending at the lake

          Ride the metro from Izvor, beside the Palace, up to Piața Victoriei, then walk north along Șoseaua Kiseleff. Pass the reopened Peasant Museum and the Arch of Triumph, then step into the Dimitrie Gusti Village Museum to see farmsteads, wooden churches, and watermills from across Romania. Finish on the lake paths of King Michael I Park. In winter the open-air museum closes at 17:00, so swap this leg with the afternoon.

        Do I need to book the Palace of the Parliament in advance?

        The Palace of the Parliament needs a reservation. It can only be seen on a guided tour, so book at least 24 hours ahead and bring your passport or national ID. Driving licences and photocopies are not accepted.

        Does this route work on a Monday?

        This route does not work well on a Monday. The National Museum of Art and the National Museum of Romanian History close on Monday and Tuesday, and the Village Museum's houses partly shut early in the week. Run the plan Wednesday to Sunday.

        Is the whole day walkable?

        The first three legs of the day link up on foot and the center is flat and paved. The Kiseleff leg starts a few kilometers north of the Palace, so take the metro from Izvor to Piața Victoriei for that part.

        What should I book before I go?

        Book only the Palace of the Parliament tour. Everything else, the museums, lunch, and the metro, you can pay for on the day, though a table at Caru' cu Bere is easier with a same-morning reservation.
