Grenoble: know before you go

The practical Grenoble briefing: airport shuttle and tram fares, the tourist tax on your bill, tap water, closures to plan around, and what to book before you arrive.

Need to know

The essentials, first

Grenoble sits where the Isère and the Drac meet, with the Bastille fort on its cliff above the old town and the Alps rising on three sides. This page is the practical briefing for a first visit on foot: how to get in from Grenoble Alpes-Isère airport, how tram and bus fares work, the tourist tax that turns up on your hotel bill, what the tap water is like, safety on the streets and the stairs, and which days things close. Visa rules, currency, plugs and inter-city trains are covered on the France country guide.

Everything to sort before you go

Getting in from the airport

Most visitors fly into Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, about an hour away: direct coaches run up to hourly from early morning to late evening to Grenoble's bus station beside the train station. Grenoble Alpes-Isère airport, out at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, handles mostly winter ski flights, and in ski season a direct shuttle links it to the bus station (gare routière) in front of Grenoble's railway station. The timetable is built around flight arrivals, the ride has no stops in between, and it takes about 40 minutes. Book online if you can; if not, tickets are sold at the Grenoble bus station and by the driver, and if a flight lands late or you miss a departure, your ticket works on the next shuttle that day. The railway station sits at the edge of the center, and the bus station in front of it is where regional coaches and the city network connect, so onward trips start from the same spot.

Booking the shuttle online is strongly advised; tickets are also sold at the Grenoble bus station and by the driver, paid in cash euros or by bank card, except American Express, and a missed departure can be caught later the same day. SourceActibus, airport shuttle FAQ

Getting around

Grenoble's trams and buses run under the M réso name, and a €2 ride takes you across the city and its valley for an hour, transfers included. Buy on board the bus and it's €2.60, ten rides cost €17.10, and a day pass costs €6.60. Tickets come from the L'Appli M app, from kiosks and relay points, or straight from a contactless bank card or phone tapped on the validator, where charges stop climbing once you've taken four rides in a day. Validation is required at every boarding and every change of line. The center itself is flat and made for walking, and the cable car to the Bastille is the exception to all of it: €6.60 one way, €9.80 return, cabins every 5 to 10 minutes, last ascent about 15 minutes before closing. Its hours shift month by month: outside April to September it doesn't run on Mondays, nor on Tuesdays in November, and on many days it starts at 11:00; it runs until midnight on Friday and Saturday evenings from February to December and on more weeknights from April to October, while on other evenings the last cabin up leaves at 18:45. It also closes for several weeks of maintenance in January.

Money and payments

Grenoble's tourist tax is charged per person per night on top of your room rate, scaled to the star rating of the place you stay, and collected either by your host or by the booking platform; guests under 18 are exempt. Sightseeing, meanwhile, is cheap: the Musée dauphinois, the Musée archéologique Saint-Laurent, the Musée de l'Ancien Évêché, the Musée des Troupes de Montagne and the Musée Stendhal are all free, and Le Magasin, the contemporary art center in the old Eiffel-built hall, costs €5 and opens free on the first Sunday of the month. The Musée de Grenoble closes on Tuesdays and the free museums close on Mondays, so match the free days with your week.

The tourist tax runs from €0.80 per person per night at one-star and guesthouse stays to €4.60 in a palace, with €1.00 at two-star, €1.40 at three-star and €1.60 at four-star accommodations. SourceTaxe de séjour Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, tarifs 2026

Safety and common scams

Grenoble's center, its river quays and the Bastille are busy and comfortable on foot, day and evening, and the risks are the ordinary city ones: keep phones and wallets out of easy reach on crowded trams and around the station. Two local notes are worth having. The descent from the Bastille is real terrain, all stairs and paths that turn slick after rain or frost, so wear shoes with grip and give it time. And summer thunderstorms roll through the valley: the city closes parks and gardens when storms or strong gusts hit, and posts the news on grenoble.fr, so a green space can be locked just when you were counting on it. In an emergency call 112; 15 reaches the medical service (SAMU) and 17 the police.

Health and emergencies

Summers in Grenoble get properly hot: July's mean high reaches 28.6°C, so put the Bastille climb and any long walks in the morning and carry water. The city sits in a valley, and air quality dips when heat or winter cold traps ozone and fine particles; Atmo Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes publishes a daily index, worth a look if you have asthma or sensitive lungs. Tap water is fine to drink, as the quick facts note, and pharmacies, the ones marked with green crosses, handle the small stuff around the center.

The language

French is the language of Grenoble, and English goes a long way in hotels, museums and the student quarter but less far in small shops or at market stalls, so lead with a 'Bonjour' before any question. A handful of words covers most days: bonjour, merci, s'il vous plaît, l'addition for the bill, une navette for the airport shuttle and le téléphérique for the cable car. 'Gare routière' is the bus station beside the train station, and 'gratuit' means free, which is worth knowing in a city with this many free museums.

Transit tickets carry French names worth recognizing: '1 voyage' is a single ride and '1 jour' is a day pass. SourceM réso, fares

Accessibility

Central Grenoble is flat and much of the old town is pedestrian, which makes the core manageable on wheels; trams and buses take you farther out, and M réso runs Flexo+ PMR, a bookable service for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility, alongside the regular lines. Ask network staff about boarding help and accessible routes. The Bastille is the tricky part: the fort sits high above the city, reached by cable car or by a long run of stairs. The last cabin of each cable-car train is adapted for wheelchairs, and lifts reach the ticket desk and platform in both stations.

Public holidays and hours

Grenoble's museums, markets and galleries keep closing days that decide the shape of a visit, so check them before you fix your plans. Mondays close the Musée dauphinois, the Musée archéologique Saint-Laurent, the Musée de l'Ancien Évêché, the Musée des Troupes de Montagne and Le Magasin, and the markets too. Tuesdays close the Musée de Grenoble, Le Magasin and the Stendhal flat, while the markets trade. The Stendhal flat opens only on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons plus the first Sunday of the month, from 14:00 to 18:00. The markets at place aux Herbes, Sainte-Claire and Saint-Bruno run Tuesday to Sunday mornings, packing up at 13:00, or 13:30 at weekends. Spacejunk, the street art gallery, closes Sundays and Mondays, all of August and over Christmas, and the cable car takes January off for maintenance. The Palais du Parlement opens only for reserved group visits booked through the tourist office, so on this walk the stop is place Saint-André and the facade. Every museum on the route closes on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December; the Stendhal flat also closes on public holidays and over the Easter weekend. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are the days when the markets, the museums, the gallery and the Stendhal flat all line up, with the markets in the morning and the flat open from 14:00.

The cable car's timetable changes month by month; January is a maintenance closure, and when it runs, cabins leave every 5 to 10 minutes with a last ascent about 15 minutes before closing. SourceTéléphérique de Grenoble, hours

What to book ahead

The airport shuttle is the one thing worth booking before Grenoble: seats are sold online, the operator strongly advises reserving, and the timetable follows the flights. Tickets also turn up at the Grenoble bus station and from the driver, but online is the calmer route. Everything else can wait until you arrive. The cable car sells tickets at the station, with no timed slots, so on sunny weekends and during school holidays ride up early; January is a maintenance shutdown. The markets and the free museums need no booking at all, and the Stendhal flat's short week is worth planning an afternoon around.

Reserve the airport shuttle online; tickets are also sold at the Grenoble bus station and by the driver, and cancellations up to seven days before departure are refunded minus €3 per person. SourceActibus, airport shuttle FAQ
