The day plan

How do you spend one day in Lille on foot?

This routed Lille day starts in the market quarter, moves through the Palais des Beaux-Arts, then walks the Flemish old town before finishing on Vauban's ramparts. It assumes a Wednesday to Sunday visit, because both the Palais des Beaux-Arts and the Hospice Comtesse close on Tuesday. Buy museum tickets at the door, eat where the market and the estaminets feed you, and keep the afternoon for Vieux Lille when the Vieille Bourse book stalls are out.

    Palais des Beaux-Arts

From Wazemmes, walk to Maison Coilliot to see the Art Nouveau façade Hector Guimard built, then continue to the Palais des Beaux-Arts. Go in around midday, after the first wave, and spend the next couple of hours with the permanent collections. The whole first floor is closed for works from 7 September to 8 October 2026, and entry drops to €4 for everyone that month. From 9 October the Italy-Spain, Impressionist and Dutch galleries reopen, while the Écoles du Nord and the French 17th to 19th century rooms stay shut into 2027.

      Vieux Lille old town

Start at Palais Rihour, where the ducal palace's Gothic survivors hide behind a 19th-century facade. Cross the Grand'Place to the Vieille Bourse; its courtyard book dealers are usually out from Tuesday to Sunday afternoons. Stop at Méert for a vanilla gaufre, then the cathedral, Rue de la Monnaie, and the Hospice Comtesse before ending at Porte de Gand.

Vauban's ramparts and the green edge

Cross Jardin Vauban and head to the Citadelle. The central enceinte is a working army headquarters and stays closed to walk-in visitors, so keep to the ramparts, the Porte Royale and the moat. End with a shaded loop through the Bois de Boulogne.

        Questions about the day

        Planning your day

Which day should I follow this Lille itinerary?

Choose a Wednesday to Sunday. The Palais des Beaux-Arts and the Hospice Comtesse close on Tuesday, and on Monday the Beaux-Arts only opens from 14:00 to 18:00 while the Halles de Wazemmes stay shut. If you want the big open-air market, pick Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday morning.

Is one day enough for Lille?

One day covers the old town, the Palais des Beaux-Arts and the citadel park at an easy pace. Wazemmes adds the market and the working streets, and this plan folds it in as the morning start.

Do I need to book museum tickets in advance?

For the permanent collections you can buy at the desk. The Palais des Beaux-Arts charges €7 full and €4 reduced, and entry is free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month; the Hospice Comtesse costs €4 outside temporary exhibitions.

Can I do this plan on a Monday?

Not cleanly. The Halles de Wazemmes and the open-air market are closed, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts opens only in the afternoon. Shift the plan to another day, or start with Vieux Lille and visit the Beaux-Arts after 14:00.
