How do you spend one day in Los Angeles on foot?

This one-day plan pairs two sides of Los Angeles that belong together. The morning runs through the walkable core of downtown: a Gehry concert hall, a free contemporary art museum, a 1901 funicular, a century-old food market, and the sunlit iron atrium where Blade Runner was filmed. The afternoon ends where the city began, at the adobe and brick of Olvera Street. Then a light-rail line carries you to the Pacific for sunset on the Santa Monica Pier and dinner on the Promenade. You will cover a lot of ground. You will not need a car.

Bunker Hill: Steel Curves and a Honeycomb Veil
Start at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The free self-guided audio tour takes about an hour and walks you through Frank Gehry's stainless-steel landmark, from the Grand Lobby to the rooftop garden with its folded steel ribbons and downtown views. When you finish, cross Grand Avenue to The Broad. General admission is always free, but book a timed ticket before your trip. If you arrive without one, the standby line moves in 15 to 30 minutes on weekdays. On a weekday, time your Disney Hall tour so you finish around 11 a.m., when The Broad opens.

Down the Hill, Through the Market
Ride Angels Flight down Bunker Hill. At the bottom, Grand Central Market spreads across the block with more than 40 food stalls. It has been feeding Angelenos since 1917. Join the line at Eggslut for a breakfast sandwich that justifies its name, or get carnitas at Tacos Tumbras a Tomas, which has been here for more than 50 years. After lunch, walk half a block to the Bradbury Building. The lobby is free and open to the public. Look up: cast-iron railings, open-cage elevators, and a glass ceiling that floods the five-story atrium with light.

The Old Pueblo and the Last Great Station
Walk north to Olvera Street. This brick pedestrian lane is where 44 settlers founded El Pueblo de Los Ángeles in 1781. The oldest house in the city, Avila Adobe, sits midway along it and is free to enter. Browse the craft stalls and grab a taquito at Cielito Lindo, a stand that has been here since 1934. When you are ready, walk through to Union Station. Opened in 1939, it is the last of the great American railway stations, where Mission Revival arches meet Streamline Moderne. The waiting room alone is worth the detour. Catch the Metro E Line from Union Station toward Santa Monica.

The Pier at Sunset
The Metro E Line drops you in downtown Santa Monica, a short walk from the ocean. Head straight to the Santa Monica Pier. The wooden Municipal Pier opened in 1909 as a sewage outfall and became the city's front porch by accident. Pacific Park, the amusement section, has a solar-powered Ferris wheel visible for miles. Walk out to the end for the sunset, then double back through Palisades Park along the bluff top, where the founders wrote a deed restriction in 1892 forbidding buildings on this strip. End on Third Street Promenade, three car-free blocks of restaurants and street performers. Grab an outdoor table and let the day settle.

Do I need to book anything in advance?

Book a free timed ticket for The Broad ahead of your trip. Tickets are released monthly on the last Wednesday at 10 a.m. PT, with additional same-day tickets released the evening before. A standby line is available if you arrive without one, with typical waits of 15 to 30 minutes on weekdays. Everything else on this itinerary (Disney Hall, Angels Flight, Grand Central Market, the Bradbury Building, Olvera Street, Union Station, and the Santa Monica Pier) requires no reservation.

Is this route wheelchair accessible?

Most of the route is flat and on paved sidewalks. The Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Broad are fully accessible. Angels Flight has steps to board the funicular, but an elevator alternative connects Hill Street and Grand Avenue nearby. The Bradbury Building lobby has step-free access. The Metro E Line and all stations on this route have elevator access. Palisades Park and the Santa Monica Pier are flat and wheelchair-friendly.

What if I only have a half day?

Do the morning and midday slots: Disney Hall, The Broad, Angels Flight, Grand Central Market, and the Bradbury Building. That stretch alone delivers a full downtown Los Angeles experience. From Union Station you can catch transit anywhere you need to go next.

Can I do this itinerary on a Monday?

The Broad is closed on Mondays. The rest of the itinerary is open. Spend the extra morning time on the Walt Disney Concert Hall gardens and the self-guided audio tour, then continue with the midday slot as planned. The Bradbury Building is open Monday through Friday. The Santa Monica Pier and Promenade are open daily.
