One day in Nantes: a self-guided walking itinerary
Castle ramparts at 8:30, the reopened cathedral by mid-morning, the Passage Pommeraye after lunch, and the Loire quays by evening.

How do you spend one day in Nantes on foot?
One day in Nantes is enough to walk the city the way its history ran: from the ducal castle's free ramparts in the morning, through the old traders' lanes, west into the neoclassical Graslin quarter, and down to the Loire quays where the slave trade's cost is written in glass. You end on the former shipyard island, where the river now carries a 12-meter mechanical elephant and a banana warehouse full of bars. The route is flat, paved and nearly all pedestrianized, and for much of it you can follow the ligne verte, the green line painted on the pavement that threads 22 kilometres of the city past its art and its landmarks, free and needing no booking. You pay for two things at most, the château museum and one Machines activity, and everything else, the ramparts, the cathedral, the mémorial and Les Anneaux, is free.

Old Nantes on the free ramparts
Start on the free ramparts of the château des ducs de Bretagne as soon as they open at 8:30. The granite outer walls hide a white tuffeau palace courtyard, and the morning is the quietest time to walk them. If you want the history museum inside, it opens at 10:00 and costs 9 euros; otherwise head for the Jardin de la Psalette, the small garden tucked against the cathedral's south side, then step into the cathedral itself. The recumbent figures of François II and Marguerite de Foix wait in a side chapel while their great tomb is restored, and the west front stays under scaffolding until 2028. Leave through the Porte Saint-Pierre, the old city gate, and drop down the rue de la Juiverie to the place du Bouffay.

Lunch, then the money changers' square
Lunch on the place du Bouffay, where the terraces serve galettes, mussels and river fish in beurre blanc, the butter sauce invented downstream of here. Then cross to the place du Change, the money changers' old square, and begin the Graslin quarter at the basilique Saint-Nicolas. The quarter was planned in the 1780s and grew west, so you follow that same direction, from the basilica to the place Royale with its 1865 fountain.

The Graslin quarter and the port's memory
Climb the Passage Pommeraye, a staircase of glass and cast iron that turns a nine-metre slope into three levels of shops; it closes at 20:00, and on Sundays it opens at 9:00. Come out at the place Graslin, with the theater's eight muses and the tiled room of La Cigale, then end the quarter in the gated cours Cambronne. From there, cross to the île Feydeau, the former river island, where tall 18th-century shipowners' houses line the rue Kervégan. Drop onto the quai de la Fosse and finish at the Mémorial de l'abolition de l'esclavage, free and open-air, where glass plaques underfoot name the slave ships that sailed from this river.

The shipyard island and the banana warehouse
Cross to the Île de Nantes and the old Dubigeon shipyard, now Les Machines de l'île. The Galerie des Machines, the Carrousel des Mondes Marins and the Grand Éléphant are ticketed and keep daytime hours, so check the departure times and do them before they close. On the summer Nocturne evenings the site stays open to 22:00, which is the one way to ride the elephant after dinner. The Grand Éléphant is out for an overhaul from 2 November 2026 to 28 February 2027, and the site shuts for maintenance each January. The Parc des Chantiers and the steel rings of Les Anneaux stay open on the public quay and cost nothing, and the evening ends at the Hangar à bananes, the old banana warehouse now full of bars and restaurants facing the Loire.

Planning your day
What should I book before I go?
Book only a Grand Éléphant ride if it is running during your dates, since the elephant has set departure times and sells out. Everything else on this route can be decided on the spot; the château museum and the Machines sell tickets at the door, and you can reserve a museum time slot online if you want certainty.
