One day in Avignon: a self-guided walking itinerary

How do you spend one day in Avignon on foot?
Avignon's walled centre is compact enough to cross on foot in a single day, and this plan threads the city's three ready walks into one loop. You begin at the papal north end, where the Palais des Papes and the Pont Saint-Bénézet sit above the Rhône. At midday you drop into Place de l'Horloge and the market crowd at Les Halles, then spend the afternoon in the quieter dyers' quarter along the Sorgue canal. Buy the combined palace and bridge ticket once, eat inside Les Halles while it is open, and end among the turning water wheels of the Rue des Teinturiers. Bring a layer, because the mistral can cut through the streets in winter and spring. In July the theatre festival fills every room and table in town, so book far ahead.

Start on Place du Palais while the square is calm, then enter the Palais des Papes at opening time, when the halls are least crowded. After the palace, step into the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms and climb to the Rocher des Doms for the view over the Rhône. See the Italian paintings in the Musée du Petit Palais, then finish on the Pont Saint-Bénézet, the bridge that stops in the river.

Place de l'Horloge and the market
Move into Place de l'Horloge as the jacquemarts approach the hour, then visit Saint-Agricol and the Musée Calvet, which is free. Follow Rue des Marchands toward Les Halles and eat at the market before it closes at 14:00.

Begin at Église Saint-Didier to see the marble Portement de Croix, then continue to Collection Lambert for contemporary art in two 18th-century mansions. End this block at the Chapelle des Pénitents Gris, the chapel of Avignon's oldest brotherhood.

What should I book before this one-day visit?
Book the Palais des Papes online to secure your entry slot, and buy the combined palace and bridge ticket if you plan to do both. If your date falls in July, book your room and any festival shows as early as possible, because the city fills completely.
