The practical guide

Everything to sort before you go

Getting in from the airport

La Rochelle is compact enough that either arrival point drops you a short ride from the Vieux-Port. From La Rochelle Île de Ré Airport, Yélo bus Illico 1b runs to the centre Monday to Saturday and line D9 runs Sundays and public holidays; the ticket is €1.50 bought on board. The Gare de La Rochelle sits on the edge of the old town, where the station forecourt works as a shared pedestrian, bike and bus zone.

Getting around

The flat old town is easiest on foot, and most sights sit inside a compact loop. Yélo is the bus network for La Rochelle and its 28 surrounding communes; one ticket covers an hour of travel with transfers. A free electric Cœur de Ville shuttle circles the centre, and Le Passeur, a solar ferry, crosses the Vieux-Port mouth in about three minutes.

The free Cœur de Ville shuttle runs every 15 minutes from 9:00 to 19:30, Tuesday to Saturday all year, and daily in summer and during the Christmas holidays. It is wheelchair accessible. SourceYélo La RochelleAgglomération La Rochelle

On Sundays and public holidays, five Yélo lines run every 40 minutes from 9:00 to 20:00; line D9 serves the airport and the station. SourceYélo La Rochelle

Money and payments

Expect a tourist tax on your accommodation bill, charged per person per night and set by the star rating of the property. The main sights are reasonably priced: the two open towers share a €9.50 full-visit ticket, free for under 18s and for 18 to 25 year olds who are EU citizens or residents in France, and the Musée Maritime charges €8 for adults. The La Rochelle Océan Pass bundles transport, museums and guided visits if you plan several paid sights.

Safety and common scams

La Rochelle is a safe, walkable city, and the old town, Vieux-Port and seafront stay busy into the evening. The centre is built around shared zones where pedestrians and cyclists have priority over cars, and the station area is capped at 20 km/h. For emergencies, use the national numbers listed in the France country guide.

Staying connected

Download the Yélo app before you leave home to buy bus tickets on your phone, and use the tourist office's interactive map to find free wifi points, public toilets and drinking fountains in the centre.

The Yélo app is free on iPhone and Android and sells single, 10-trip and 24-hour or 7-day passes directly from your phone. SourceYélo La Rochelle

Etiquette and tipping

A bonjour before any request is the local minimum, in shops and at market stalls. Cyclists are a fact of life here: stay off the cycle lanes and expect bikes to filter past on the shared streets. On market mornings, go early for the produce and let stallholders serve locals before the tourist rush.

Accessibility

The old town is largely flat and the seafront and park paths are step-free, but the medieval towers keep narrow spiral stairs and are not fully accessible. The free Cœur de Ville shuttle is wheelchair accessible, and the open towers run some French Sign Language tours.

Public holidays and hours

Local opening rhythms matter more than the date on the calendar. The Musée Maritime closes on Mondays, the Aquarium takes a maintenance break for a few weeks each January, and most of the Saint-Nicolas fishing quarter is shut on Sundays. The Tour Saint-Nicolas is closed to visitors until about 2030.

What to book ahead

Book the Aquarium for July, August and school holidays; the aquarium itself recommends arriving early in the morning or late in the day at peak times. Reserve the open towers online in high season, and buy the La Rochelle Océan Pass before you travel if you want museums, the ferry and buses in one ticket.
